Michael Penix completed 8-of-24 passes for 125 yards and four interceptions in the Falcons’ 16-0, Week 8 loss to the Bucs.

Penix got off to a poor start and his play spiraled from there. He threw a pass directly at Bucs linebacker Alex Anzalone’s chest on the first play of Atlanta’s second drive for an easy interception. Anzalone then took the ball away two Penix throws later by, again, simply standing in the throwing lane. Penix wasn’t seeing the field and nothing changed as the game went on. He threw two more interceptions and had several other passes that could have been caught by the Bucs. Even his best play, a 76-yard toss to Jahan Dotson, was a throw into double coverage where two Bucs defensive backs collided, leaving Dotson wide open at the last second. This looked like an homage to Cooper Rush’s two catastrophic starts to open the season. Penix should rebound in Week 9 versus the Bengals, but his fantasy stock is undoubtedly on the decline. He is shuffling to the back of the QB2 ranks for Week 9.

The stats may make it seem like Penix had his way with the 49ers, but it didn’t seem like a seamless performance in reality. He missed some deep passes and overthrew Drake London on a clear touchdown in the second half. He really wasn’t able to get much going down the field, but the Falcons’ defense forced four turnovers, which set up some short fields that Penix was able to take advantage of. He gets a good matchup against the Bucs next week.

Penix was a mess in the first half, missing Drake London on what should have been an walk-in 30-yard touchdown. The Falcons abandoned the run game in the second half, facing a three touchdown deficit, and Penix threw three touchdowns in hurry-up mode. Taking five sacks on the day, Penix targeted London and Jahan Dotson heavily, connecting with Dotson on a nicely thrown 41-yard gain in the second half. This was the first multiple-TD game of Penix’s season. He’ll be a low-ceiling superflex play in Week 7 against the 49ers.

Penix was able to practice this week and will start for Atlanta in a potentially high scoring game against the Bears. Penix should be considered a streaming option in most formats. Falcons declared QB Cooper Rush, QB Jack Strand, CB C.J. Henderson, DB Malcolm DeWalt IV, LB Christian Harris, OL Ethan Onianwa, and DE Drake Jackson inactive against the Bears.

It was reported the day after the Falcons’ overtime loss to the Ravens that there was “optimism” that Penix would start in Week 6. After being upgraded to a full participant on Thursday’s practice, he seemed like a lock to be ready to go by Sunday, so Friday’s news isn’t all that unexpected. Penix has thrown for 719 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception this season, throwing one touchdown in each of his first three games. He’ll be on the fantasy radar in 2QB/Superflex leagues against a Bears defense that has allowed just two top-12 fantasy finishes to opposing QBs this season.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
This is great news for the Falcons’ offense, which can barely function with Tua Tagovailoa at the helm. Penix is firmly on track to play in Week 6 against the Bears, as long as he gets through the week setback-free. Penix can be viewed as a high-end QB2 with four teams on bye.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
“We’ll see how he’s feeling,” head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters Wednesday morning, adding that Penix should be able to play through the injury. Even if it’s a limited practice session for Penix, it’s good news for his Week 6 availability following his Sunday night rib injury against the Ravens. Penix, operating under center at a much higher rate than last season, is among the most efficient quarterbacks in the league through Week 5. If Penix is out, Tua Tagovailoa would represent a major downgrade for all Atlanta pass catchers.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
Penix said after Sunday’s loss that he didn’t believe his injury would be long-term. He was replaced by Tua Tagovailoa in overtime because of his injury, but he also added that he likely would have gone back on the field had the Falcons received the ball to start the extra quarter. Instead, Penix said his pain worsened the longer he sat, which was why he ultimately didn’t go back in. Penix’s status will be one to monitor throughout the week. If he can’t start in Week 6, Tagovailoa would be in line to start his first game of the season.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
Penix will undergo an MRI on Monday to confirm the severity of his injury, but it doesn’t sound like he’s at risk of missing much time. Penix exited in the fourth quarter of Sunday night’s game against the Ravens and was forced to stay on the sideline in overtime to watch Tua Tagovailoa throw the game-losing interception shortly after the Ravens scored the go-ahead touchdown. Penix threw for 240 yards and a touchdown and has been solid in his three games since returning from injury. If he’s not able to start in Week 6, Tagovailoa would presumably draw the start at home against the Bears.

Penix took the full brunt of a brutal hit to the midsection late in the fourth quarter of Week 5 against the Ravens. He would leave for one play due to the medical timeout, return for one play, and then retreat to the sideline. Tua Tagovailoa came on in relief in overtime, with the team designating Penix questionable to return with an injury to his ribs. Penix completed 19-of-32 passes for 240 yards and one touchdown prior to departing, adding eight yards on two carries. Fantasy managers will want to monitor his practice status in the coming days ahead of a Week 6 meeting with the Bears.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
Penix wasn’t asked to do much with his arm as the Falcons tied a franchise record with five rushing scores, but the threat of consistent and reliable passing has done wonders for a Falcons offense that looked lost through two games behind poor quarterback play. It also doesn’t hurt when your All Pro running back goes for a 59-yard touchdown on his first touch of the game. The Falcons were never threatened by an underperforming Saints team after jumping out to a 14-point lead in the first quarter. Penix has yet to be called on for increased passing volume through two starts, something that could change, pending the health of Lamar Jackson, in Week 5 when they host the Ravens. Penix remains a middling QB2 and does not warrant starting in all formats outside of two-quarterback leagues.

Patriots activated WR Mack Hollins (calf) from injured reserve.

Hollins misses the minimum four games with a calf injury and returns to a pass catching corps without A.J. Brown and TreVeyon Henderson, while tight end Hunter Henry is also listed as questionable for Week 9. There is opportunity for him to lead the team in receiving with the bulk of the remaining healthy players largely operating in the short-to-intermediate areas of the field. Fantasy managers in a bid could do worse as a FLEX option against the Packers.

Falcons placed RB Brian Robinson (hamstring) on injured reserve.

The timing of the transaction is curious after Robinson missed the previous two games with the injury, potentially signaling a setback in his recovery. Either way, Robinson will now miss the coming four games, at minimum, leaving Bijan Robinson in a clear workhorse role in the immediate future.

Broncos activated WR Pat Bryant (ankle) from injured reserve.

The young receiver will make his return to the active game-day roster after missing the minimum four games after injuring his ankle in Week 4. He returns to a passing attack with no clear direction or upside, with no receiver other than Courtland Sutton playing in a near every-down role of late. Perhaps he can carve out a featured role, but it is more likely this team simply doesn’t have viable weekly fantasy assets through the air.

49ers activated WR Demarcus Robinson (ankle) from injured reserve.

The veteran receiver returns to a decimated receiving corps, potentially in line to serve as the top receiver against the Raiders in Week 9. Fantasy managers in a bind could do much worse than taking a swing on Robinson considering the elite matchup and lack of viable depth, for a 49ers team with one of the week’s highest Vegas implied team totals on the board.

Vikings ruled out Jauan Jennings (calf) for Week 9 against the Bills.

The fantasy implications of Jennings’ absence are negligible, with the bigger boost to the passing offense being the absence of Kyler Murray, who is looking at a multi-game absence with a Grade 2 hamstring injury. Tai Felton appears to be in line for additional run as the team’s WR3, although he is not a recommended streaming option with both Jefferson and Jordan Addison healthy.

Vikings ruled out Kyler Murray (hamstring) for Week 9 against the Bills.

Murray will likely be sidelined for multiple games after testing revealed a Grade 2 hamstring strain. Carson Wentz will draw the start under center while the team is reportedly exploring the trade market ahead of Tuesday’s deadline. The absence of Murray should benefit alpha wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who has struggled to develop chemistry with Murray this season.

Dion Dawkins (ribs) and Alec Anderson (ankle) are questionable for Week 9 against the Vikings.

The Bills enter Week 9 with the entire left side of one the league’s top offensive lines questionable. Both players did not practice through Friday before drawing the questionable tag for Monday Night Football against the Vikings. We likely won’t know their respective statuses until inactives are released 90 minutes prior to first kick. Absences would be a detriment to the run game and could lead to increased emphasis on the short areas of the field through the air.

Bills ruled out Joshua Palmer (hamstring) for Week 9 against the Vikings.

Palmer has been in and out of the lineup since injuring his hamstring in Week 4, managing only seven offensive snaps last week before succumbing to an aggravation. He will miss his second game of the season when the Bills take on the one-loss Vikings on Monday Night Football. Skylar Bell could find himself active for the third time in his rookie season, although DJ Moore, Keon Coleman, and Khalil Shakir are likely to dominate snaps and routes at the position.

    Saints released RB Kendre Miller.

The team brought back Audric Estime to their practice squad earlier in the week, releasing Miller Saturday. The moved comes after the veteran played 137 offensive snaps for a backfield missing its top option for most of the season. Miller had a 20-carry game for the Saints three short weeks ago and now finds himself without a home. Expect him to land on a practice squad in short order.

NFL Insider Jordan Schultz reports Saints WR Jordyn Tyson (hamstring) “should be good to go” against the Browns in Week 9.

The oft-injured Tyson hurt his hamstring in training camp and is yet to make his NFL debut. According to Schultz, he should be good to go Sunday against the Browns. A limited participant in practice throughout the week, it’s unclear how much Tyson might play in his first game. Eventually, though, he should settle in as the Saints’ WR2 behind Chris Olave. Tyson’s return also puts a damper on the fantasy prospects of Devaughn Vele and Juwan Johnson.
