Cardinals selected Syracuse CB Garrett Williams with the No. 72 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Williams (5’10/190) took a redshirt in 2019 before starting every game he was healthy for over the next three seasons, receiving Freshman All-American recognition in 2020 with 64 tackles, 12 PBU and two interceptions. The three-time Honorable Mention All-ACC performer allowed a career 66.2% receiving catch rate and 100.6 NFL passer rating, which are sub-optimal marks. Though he’s on the shorter side for a boundary corner, Williams has advanced instincts and route recognition to go with smooth hips. Two of his four career interceptions came on plays where he read the quarterback’s eyes and broke off coverage to create an off-script turnover. Williams didn’t draw a single penalty in coverage over his last two seasons when he was limited to just 826 snaps due to multiple injuries, including a torn ACL in October that could hamper his availability in 2023. He can be muscled-off routes and allows a lot of underneath completions. Williams has size and injury red flags, but he’s very crafty, has special teams value, and doesn’t get beat deep a lot despite not being a track star.
