DeChambeau wins The NT by four

THE NORTHERN TRUST

Paramus, NJ

Playing out of the final twosome, overnight leader and World No. 21 Bryson DeChambeau crafted a 2-under-par 35-34=69 in Sunday’s final round at The Ridgewood Country Club for a 72-hole tally of 18-under 266, good for a four-shot win over runner-up Tony Finau (68), five clear of Billy Horschel (68) and Cameron Smith (69), who shared 3rd.

The 24-year-old, a pre-tourney 66/1 outright, bags his third PGA TOUR title in 69 events (64 pro), first since a P1 at the Memorial seven starts ago, also as the 54-hole leader.

With FedExCup points quadrupled, DeChambeau banks 2,000 points and jumps to No. 1 in the FEC standings. He beat the 6th-strongest field of the season (769) and moves to 12th in the Official World Golf Ranking.

FEC Rank: 1st (UP eight); career high

OWGR: 12th (UP nine); career high

This was DeChambeau’s second NORTHERN TRUST after a MC last year by one (Glen Oaks Club) on 3-over 143 (71-72). Overall, it was his fourth FEC Playoffs event, first top 25.

After kicking off with 68-66 and career-low 63, DeChambeau began with a four-shot lead over playing competitor Keegan Bradley, who chased a season- and week-low 62 in R3 with 7-over 78. Bradley, who began solo 2nd, the first time he’s been in the top 10 thru 54 holes in 22 starts, played like it. After a par-par start, the St. Johns alum bogeyed three and doubled four (tee ball OB), now eight back and quickly out of the picture, eventually cratering to T34.

Not to be distracted, DeChambeau hit eight (of 14) fairways and 16 greens in regulation, gaining 2.340 strokes tee-to-green. He outflanked two 3-putt bogeys at holes 3 and 9 with four birdies at 1, 2, 12 and 13, three from between eight and 13 feet, posting 1.875 putts per GIR and -0.715 SG: Putting, needing 32 total putts.

In the end, DeChambeau began the day leading by four, led by three at the break, led by four coming to the 72nd hole, and won by four.

He wasn’t really challenged. The closest runner-up Finau got was three, after beginning five back out of the penultimate twosome, and the closest anyone got was TOUR rookie Aaron Wise six groups ahead. Wise, the 2016 NCAA Individual Champion (while at Oregon), got within two after his sixth birdie of the round at 14, but faded to T5, six adrift after back-to-back squares at 16 and 17.

For the week, DeChambeau tallied 24 birdies versus six bogeys and ranked No. 1 in Total Birdies and the All-Around, and T1 in GIR, Par-3 and Par-4 Scoring. See his strokes gained stats below and his full stats at the bottom.

DeChambeau is the 34th straight winner this season with either 0 or 1 week off prior to their wins. In total, 40 (of 44) non-team event winners fall into this category. #NoLongLayoffsPlease

FUN FACT: Through 44 (non-team) events this season, DeChambeau is the seventh player to MC in the start prior and then win in his next start: Justin Thomas (WGC-BI); Dustin Johnson (Canadian Open); Michael Kim (John Deere); Bubba Watson (Travelers); Rory McIlroy (API); Ryan Armour (Sanderson Farms).

The MC at the season’s final major ended a poor run of form that began with a mid-tourney WD (shoulder) at the John Deere – as the defending champ. After an MRI, he jumped on the charter to The Open and finished T51.

The following week in Hamburg, Germany, he was a 54-hole co-leader at the Porsche European Open and infamously played his final four holes in 5-over for T13, five adrift of playing competitor and champion Richard McEvoy.

The closing 6-over 78 was lowlighted by a walk-off snowman and subsequently, a firestorm of criticism for his brush-off of McEvoy, which he later apologized for, even in an on-camera, sit-down interview.

Now then, 30th at the no-cut WGC-Bridgestone and the trunk slam at the PGA, which left him agonizingly at 9th in the U.S. Ryder Cup team standings.

With the Top 8 automatically qualifying for Team USA at the conclusion of the PGA, the California native was reeling – both on and off the course – and he didn’t do himself any favors by missing the cut at Bellerive.

That’s all a distant memory now after hoisting his second trophy of the season and (pretty much) locking up a captain’s pick. The Dallas resident becomes the season’s ninth multiple champion, sixth American, with four of those six already on the squad: Bubba Watson (wins x3), Dustin Johnson (x3), Justin Thomas (x3), Brooks Koepka (x2).

Skipper Jim Furyk will make three captain’s picks on September 4th following the Dell Technologies, while his final selection will be made September 10th after the BMW Championship. The Ryder Cup gets underway at the end of September (in Paris) with the U.S. looking to win in Europe for the first time since 1993.

DeChambeau has not played on the Ryder or Presidents Cup teams and was on the losing side at the 2015 Walker Cup, but won the 2015 U.S. Amateur and was also the 2015 NCAA Individual Champion while at SMU. He became just the fifth golfer in history to win the U.S. Am and NCAA Individual in the same year, joining Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and Ryan Moore. #HeadyStuff
