Local hero Ernie Els is one of three invites taking part in this week’s Nedbank Golf Challenge at Gary Player CC in South Africa, a venue where he’s a three-time winner.
Those victories came a long time ago (1999, 2000 and 2002) when this tournament was played in a 12-man field format and he’s also had four second places. The veteran has only contested this event once since 2010 though, and was 29th out of 30 in 2013. Is he still worthy of sleeper status? Well, T32 in The Open at Royal Portrush was a decent effort and despite MC at the Alfred Dunhill Links last time, he fired 70-72-69. Els’ assessment of his own game? “I’m over 50 now, so I’m the oldest guy in the field but I’ve had so many great memories around Sun City. I’ve had a long trip. Went to Asia for a week, so the body is not all together there yet but it’s getting there. I’m hitting it nice. You know, just the golf course is getting longer. But it’s in great shape and I’m hoping for a nice week. I’m not the player I used to be. But you know, hey, if I get hot, it will be great.” Els, of course, is the captain of the International team for next month’s Presidents Cup.
