With preferred lies in effect and playing out of the penultimate twosome, second-round quad-leader and World No. 351 Josh Teater fashioned a 3-under-par 33-36=69 in the final round of the opposite-field Puerto Rico Open to finish up on 19-under 269, up one spot to a career-tying-best solo 2nd, one short of overnight leader and champion Viktor Hovland, who birdied the 72nd hole for final-round 70.
The 40-year-old, chasing his first PGA TOUR win in 193 events, settles for his second runner-up, first since T2 at the 2013 Farmers. Playing this season on conditional status, he improves to 3-for-9 with two top 25s, bettering a T11 at the opposite-field Bermuda five starts ago. This was the Kentucky native’s fifth PRO and first finish in the top 30 (T38/2015). After opening with 66-68-66, he began solo 3rd, two back, and hit 11 (of 14) fairways and 16 greens in regulation. The Morehead State alum squared two bogeys at 10 and 11 (3-putt), outpaced by five birdies at 1, 5, 6, 15 and 17. He registered 1.813 putts per GIR, needing 32 total putts, and wrapped the week with two eagles and 20 birdies versus five bogeys.
