Salas was designated for assignment by the Phillies to clear room on the 40-man roster for Drew Smyly. It’s the second time he’s been sent outright to Lehigh Valley, and likely the last.

The move clears a spot on the roster for Drew Smyly. It’s the second time in the last month that Salas has been removed from the 40-man roster and he should clear waivers again.

Salas was designated for assignment by Philadelphia at the end of June, but he passed through waivers unclaimed and will now get another look. The veteran right-hander figures to pitch in a low-leverage bullpen role.

Salas inked a minor league pact with the Phils earlier this month and it didn’t take him long to make it to the majors. Salas is expected to report to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Given the injuries and the struggles that the Phillies’ have had in their bullpen this season, it’s a nice low-risk signing. The 34-year-old has been pitching in the Mexican League, where he posted a 3.90 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 28/4 K/BB ratio across 27 2/3 innings.

Salas was a highly effective closer then setup man last season for the Cards, registering a 2.28 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 24 saves in 75 innings. But he has struggled with his mechanics this year and currently sports a 6.35 ERA through 14 appearances. In slightly related news, Jason Motte has more job security than ever.

Goold is speculating here and not reporting. Salas has struggled after leading the Cardinals in saves last season and is currently the owner of a 6.32 ERA. He would presumably serve as the corresponding roster move for the promotion of Chuckie Fick.

Salas has struggled with his mechanics this year and will take his 6.32 ERA to the minors. He’ll likely be back with the Cardinals in short order should Chuckie Fick struggle or an injury occur. Fick has a 3.24 ERA in parts of six seasons in the minors
