A 2009 Walker Cup contemporary of Tommy Fleetwood and Chris Paisley, in the team downed at Merion, Whitnell has only ever racked up 15 starts on the European Tour with just the one top ten in late 2009 at the Alfred Dunhill Championship (so good memories of South Africa). Nor has he ever had much opportunity on the second tier, making 17 starts between 2010 and 2012. He plugged away on the third and fourth tiers and then found some form in 2019, ticking third and first on the Challenge Tour before grabbing a card via Q School. He opened 2020 with a missed cut in the Alfred Dunhill Championship and T64 in the Australian PGA Championship.
