Woods commits to Frys.com Open

Confirming news that had been expected for months, Tiger Woods committed Friday to the season-opening Frys.com Open.

Woods will be making his second start at the northern California event, and first since 2011 when he finished T-30 at CordeValle Golf Club.

Woods’ appearance will fulfill an obligation stemming from his appearance at the 2012 Turkish Airlines World Golf Final. The unsanctioned event took place during the same week as the Frys.com Open, and as part of the waiver each of the eight participants signed with the PGA Tour, they agreed to play the Frys.com event at least once in the subsequent three years.

This year’s event marks the end of that three-year window, and while Lee Westwood, Hunter Mahan and Matt Kuchar played last year, Woods and former world No. 1 Rory McIlroy instead opted to play next month. The other members of the “Turkey Eight” are Webb Simpson, Justin Rose and Charl Schwartzel.

Woods hasn’t played since a T-10 finish at the Wyndham Championship last month. It marked his first top-10 finish in nearly two years but left him short of qualifying for the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

The Frys.com Open will be held Oct. 15-18 at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif.
