The shush heard ‘round Bernardus: Kupcho and Duncan’s heroics keep Solheim Cup tied heading into Sunday

Entering the weekend at Bernardus Golf, the United Sates and Europe were tied.

Then Europe went on a roll and was up 8-5 at one point on Saturday.

Now, it’s all tied up, 8-8, once more.

The hero to thank for the U.S. taking momentum into Sunday’s singles? None other than Jennifer Kupcho, who was the subject of controversy for a few hours during her Saturday foursomes match with Lindy Duncan.

It all started on the par-5 10th, when Europe’s Celine Boutier chipped in for birdie. Kupcho responded with a birdie putt of her own, preventing Boutier and Carlota Ciganda from going 2 up.

That’s when she promptly shushed the Netherlands crowd, and the internet was... confused.

Should you shush when you’re losing?

Well, that debate was ended eight holes later when Kupcho took that confidence and delivered birdie putts on 17 and 18 to take the U.S. from 1 down to 1 up, winning the match.

They weren’t gimme putts either. Kupcho, in her fourth Solheim Cup appearance, made an incredible 91-footer on the par-4 17th to tie the match. Then, on the par-4 18th, Kupcho made another long putt to close match play for the day and tie the Solheim Cup once again.

“I hardly even read it,” Kupcho said of the 91-footer after the match.

During Saturday morning’s foursomes, Europe went 3-1, starting with Maja Stark and Linn Grant beating Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz, 3 and 2. That loss marked the end of Korda and Corpuz’s winning streak. The duo was previously 5-0-0 in Solheim Cup matches when playing together, including a win on Friday.

Kupcho and Rose Zhang lost 1 up to Leona Maguire and Esther Henseleit in the second match. Andrea Lee and Auston Kim lost 4 and 3 to Mimi Rhodes and Nastasia Nadaud in the third match.

The United States’ only point in the morning came from Alison Lee and Lauren Coughlin routing Charley Hull and Lottie Woad, 6 and 5.

The tide shifted the opposite way in the afternoon.

The only U.S. fourball loss on Saturday came from Coughlin and Megan Khang seeing notable unbeaten streaks snapped by Stark and Grant in the first match, which they lost 2 and 1.

The remaining three matches saw the U.S. go 3-0-0, with Yealimi Noh and Andrea Lee winning 1 up over Hull and Woad, Zhang and Kim winning 3 and 2 over Nadaud and Maguire, and Kupcho and Duncan’s win.

All that’s left is Sunday’s 12 singles matches to decide the cup.

And as for Kupcho? Golfweek reporter Beth Ann Nichols may have said it best.

“Jennifer Kupcho can now feel free to shush anyone she wants!”
