Michelle Wie has accepted an invitation to play in the Evian Masters tournament on the Ladies European Tour July 21-24. And she likely will follow that tournament with an appearance at qualifying for the Women’s British Open the following week.
The 14-year-old ninth-grade student, who missed the cut by a solitary shot in the Sony Hawaiian Open on the PGA Tour near her home, confirmed her attendance in the Evian after being invited this week by organizers of the event.
‘Michelle confirmed her entry for the Evian Masters last Friday, and she may well try to qualify for the (Women’s British Open),’ a Ladies’ European Tour spokesman told Reuters.
‘If she makes the American Curtis Cup team, she is exempt to go into final qualifying for the (Women’s British Open), which will be played on the Monday before the tournament.
‘I’m pretty sure she will be there,’ he added.
Despite her youth, Wie will not become the youngest player to have ever played on the Ladies European Tour. Englands Henrietta Brockway and Florentyna Parker, two of the Faldo Junior Series protgs, played in two events last season aged 13 - the Wales WPGA Championship of Europe and the Lancia Ladies Open of Portugal.
