Retief Goosen used a hot putter down the stretch Sunday to capture his second U.S. Open title. In the process, the South African jumped two spots to No. 7 in this week’s Official World Golf Rankings.
Tiger Woods’ majorless streak is at eight, but the two-time U.S. Open champion remained in first. Ernie Els, also a two-time winner, played with Goosen in Sunday’s final group and if he won and Woods came in worse than a tie for sixth, Els would be the new No. 1. Els, who remains No. 2., struggled to an 80 and tied for ninth, while Woods shared 17th place.
Vijay Singh stayed in third place, while Phil Mickelson moved up one to fourth. Mickelson double-bogeyed the 71st hole of the U.S. Open to lose his chance at the single-season Grand Slam. Davis Love III, who missed the cut at Shinnecock Hills, fell one to fifth.
Mike Weir stayed in sixth, while Goosen moved up to seven. Padraig Harrington dipped one to eighth. Jim Furyk, who won the 2003 U.S. Open and made the cut in his title defense despite missing the last several months after wrist surgery, fell one notch to ninth. Sergio Garcia rounded out the top-10.
Kenny Perry and Chad Campbell switched places from last week with Perry taking 11th and Campbell falling to 12th. Stuart Appleby, Darren Clarke and Adam Scott kept their spots from last week.
David Toms, Fred Couples and Scott Verplank stayed pat at spots 16-18. Jay Haas, the 50-year-old who tied for ninth, rose to 19th while K.J. Choi slipped to No. 20.
