Levin Captures Canadian Tour Event

RIVIERA MAYA, Mexico -- Spencer Levin closed with a 7-under 65 Sunday to win the Iberostar Riviera Maya Open.

Levin, who lost a playoff at the season-opening San Jose International Open, completed his first tour title at 21-under-par 267.

‘This feels just great,’ Levin exclaimed. ‘I’ve been playing very well and to finally seal the deal is a wonderful feeling. It sure felt good to make that final putt.’

Derek Gillespie led entering the final round, but finished second despite a closing 67. He ended one stroke back at minus-20.

Anders Hultman took third at 18-under-par 270 thanks to an 8-under 64 on Sunday. Travis Johnson, Joseph Lanza, Michael Mezei and Hoyt McGarity tied for fourth at 14-under-par 274.

Levin had a quite front nine at Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club with eight pars and a birdie to turn at 15 under.

The back nine was a different story. He birdied three in a row from the 11th. Levin then eagled the par-5 14 to jump to 20 under.

With Gillespie watching, Levin poured in a 20-foot birdie putt at the last to finish at 21-under.

‘I just had a feeling Derek was going to make his putt, so I knew I had to get mine to drop,’ stated Levin.

Gillespie, a two-time winner on the Canadian Tour, had an even-par front nine with two birdies and two bogeys. He birdied the 12th, then made eagle at 14 to move to 18-under. After tripping to a bogey on 15, Levin birdied the final three holes to end one back.

Wil Collins, Josh Habig, Bret Guetz and Richard Gilkey shared eighth place at 13-under-par 275.
