Golf fashion has changed in the 14 years since Casey Martin competed in his lone major championship.
The University of Oregon men’s golf coach returns next week to The Olympic Club for his second U.S. Open. Nike, which outfits the school and sponsored Martin when he played on the Nationwide and PGA tours, will send him a wardrobe of clothing to choose from for the week.
Martin, however, has a volunteer fashion consultant to help him decide on his outfits: Chip Kelly, Oregon’s head football coach.
“Chip texted me that he wants to coordinate all my uniforms,” Martin said, according to The Oregonian. “No joke, he did.”
Consider Kelly’s gesture as returning a favor from three years ago. He asked Martin to provide input on what the football team would wear in the 2009 season. Martin could have chosen from any of up to 80 different uniform combinations.
“It was fun,” Martin said. “Until I see what Chip does to me this week. And then, maybe payback for the white, green and grey Utah (game) uniforms.”
