The latest chapter in the ongoing saga of anchoring will apparently be written in a matter of days.
The USGA has announced a news conference for 8 a.m. ET on Tuesday, May 21 during which the governing body will ‘announce final action on proposed changes to the Rules of Golf.’ The conference be broadcast live on Golf Channel.
Last November, the USGA joined with the R&A to propose a ban on anchoring, with the rule change anticipated to go into effect on January 1, 2016. Within the 90-day commenting period, the PGA Tour notably came down in opposition of the proposed ban, a position that was also shared by the PGA of America.
According to the release, the news conference will include Glen Nager, USGA president, Mike Davis, the group’s executive director, and Mark Newell, chairman of the USGA Rules of Golf committee.
As recently as last month, members of the governing body made it clear that a decision was imminent, but would not specify any timeline for an announcement.
‘We have taken a couple months to really assess all that information and really look at it,” Davis said in an appearance on ‘Morning Drive’ on April 29. “We do anticipate a decision sometime this spring. But we’re still in the midst of putting all that together. It was a great process.”
