Lions signed Missouri QB James Franklin.
Franklin (6-foot-1 1/2, 228) succeeded Blaine Gabbert under center for the Tigers, starting for three years. He finished his career with a 51:25 TD-to-INT ratio and 62.1% completion rate in Mizzou’s spread offense. A dual threat, Franklin added 21 touchdowns on the ground. Injury prone with suspect ball location and arm strength, Franklin would have a better chance at an NFL career if he were more willing to change positions. He’s been averse to the idea to this point. With not much behind Matthew Stafford in Detroit, Franklin should at least be given a shot to prove himself as a quarterback in practice settings.
  • FA Quarterback #14
Lions waived/released QB James Franklin, FB Chad Abram, P Drew Butler, CB Jonte Green, CB Aaron Hester and K Giorgio Tavecchio.
A three-year starter in Missouri’s explosive offense, Franklin threw for 51 touchdowns and ran for 21 in his college career. But he doesn’t have an NFL arm and has been unwilling to switch positions. Tavecchio loses out to Nate Freese for the kicking gig.
