Story is coming off his best season in quite some time and certainly looks like he’s ready to keep it going. The 33-year-old is slashing .391/.417/.609 this spring and just swiped his first base of the Grapefruit League season. He should be going as a top 100 pick given his power and speed upside.

Braiden Ward went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base against the Phillies on Monday.

Ward now has a whopping 14 stolen bases in 14 spring games, while slashing .464/.531/.500 in 28 at-bats. The Red Sox got him from the Rockies in a trade for Brennan Bernardino in November after Ward hit .290/.395/.391 with two homers and 57 steals between Double- and Triple-A last season. He’ll start the year in Triple-A, but if an injury opens up a spot for Ward in Boston this season, his speed could be a real difference-maker.

Garrett Crochet allowed three runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings against the Phillies on Monday.

Crochet’s fastball was a little over one mph down from where he saw it last year, but he registered a 29 percent whiff rate, 34 percent CSW, and 71 percent strike rate overall, so there’s little to be concerned about here. It was a particularly humid day in Florida, and Crochet said that he wished he could pitch shirtless because he had to change his jersey after just one inning. Keep confidently drafting him as one of the top three starting pitchers in fantasy drafts.

Brayan Bello allowed only one hit — a Spencer Horwitz solo homer — and struck out seven in five innings to beat Team Israel on Tuesday.

Bello faced just the one batter over the minimum. His velocity is still down 1-1.5 mph from last year, as it was in his two starts for the Red Sox before joining the Dominican team. He was plenty effective today against a lineup that included two MLB bats (Horwitz and Harrison Bader), but what he’s showed so far this spring probably isn’t going to result in a strong ERA versus major league lineups.

Triston Casas (knee) confirms that he will not be able to return in time to play any spring training games.

Casas had started two weeks ago, that he believed he had a shot to break camp with the Red Sox, but since then, he has not been able to complete the baserunning and sliding hurdles that he would need to get into a game. He will still likely be on the field at the beginning of the season, just for Triple-A Worcester. The goal remains for Casas to be back in Boston by the end of May.

Red Sox optioned LHP Jake Bennett to minor league camp.

Bennett, who the Red Sox acquired from the Nationals for Luis Perales this offseason, made two spring training appearances, allowing three runs on five hits in three innings while striking out three. The 6'6" left-handed pitcher also flashed upper 90s velocity on his fastball while topping out at 98 mph, which is a significant increase from what he had shown with the Nationals. He also debuted a cutter that pounded the strike zone against righties. He could be a fast-rising prospect for the Red Sox this season. Boston also reassigned catchers Nate Baez and Ronald Rosario, RHPs Osvaldo Berrios, Hobie Harris, Vinny Nittoli, and Devin Sweet, and LHP Jeremy Wu-Yelland to minor league camp.
Noah Song

Noah Song pitched 1 2/3 hitless innings and struck out three in relief Sunday against the Pirates.

It sure would be great to see Song in the majors this summer, seven years after his shining debut in the Red Sox system was followed by a three-year commitment to the Navy. He touched 97.6 mph and averaged 95.0 mph with his fastball in the 31-pitch outing today. Last year, he averaged 93.8 mph in three late relief appearances for Triple-A Worcester.
Masataka Yoshida

BOS Left Fielder #7

Masataka Yoshida blasted a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning on Sunday as Japan held on to beat Australia 4-3 in the World Baseball Classic.

Japan’s offense was held off the board entirely and they faced a 1-0 deficit heading to the home half of the seventh inning. Shohei Ohtani worked a leadoff walk and was on second base with two outs when Yoshida clubbed an 0-1 slider from Jon Kennedy for his 394-foot (107.1 mph EV) game-changing two-run blast. Yoshida also drew a walk in the contest, finishing the contest 1-for-3. He also homered and drove in three runs during Saturday’s victory over Korea while reaching three times with an RBI against Chinese Taipei on Friday.
Johan Oviedo

BOS Starting Pitcher #29

Johan Oviedo blanked the Rays for 3 1/3 innings and struck out four in the Red Sox’s 2-0 rain-shortened victory Saturday.

The game was called in the bottom of the sixth. Oviedo, who was facing a Rays lineup without any projected starters, went without a walk today, even though he threw first-pitch strikes to just four of the 12 batters he faced. He also had a just a 21% CSW. It’s a really nice outing in the box score, but a major league lineup probably would have fared better against him.
Romy Gonzalez

BOS 1st Baseman #23

Romy Gonzalez (shoulder) will visit a specialist Wednesday to determine whether he’ll require surgery.

Gonzalez has been held out of baseball activities this spring and won’t be ready for Opening Day. He received a PRP injection last month and hasn’t been progressing to the point where he can resume hitting again. There should be a definitive update on his status at some point later this week. He would be facing a lengthy absence if he winds up requiring a shoulder procedure.
