Sanches

Sanches was one of two pitchers the Padres received from Kansas City for Rondell White last year. He’s just a decent minor league reliever.

The Phillies’ decision to sell is really going to kill the Red Barons’ playoff chances. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is atop the Interational League’s north division, but the club might not have much of a roster left by the time Pat Gillick is done. Sanches will resume working in middle relief. He’s given up five runs in 7 2/3 innings for the Phillies this season.

Sanches had worked three hitless innings since being recalled. He likely would outpitch Ryan Franklin if given a chance, but there was no way the Phillies were going to make that switch.

Because of Mike Lieberthal’s injury, Sanches is returning after just four days in the minors. That he’s being chosen over catcher Carlos Ruiz has a lot to do with the nine innings the Philadelphia bullpen threw on Friday night.

Sanches has given up five runs in 7 2/3 innings of relief for the Phillies this season.

Sanches may not stick around since the Phillies will need to add a starter this weekend, but he has earned an opportunity. The 27-year-old had a 2.49 ERA and a 23/4 K/BB ratio in 21 2/3 innings for the Red Barons. Last year, he had a 3.69 ERA and a 75/27 K/BB ratio in 83 innings for the same club. He might be a decent middle reliever if he gets the chance.

Sanchez has allowed 13 runs in 18 1/3 innings of relief this season. He’ll be recalled in September.

He’ll replace the injured David Herndon (elbow) on the active roster. Sanches, 33, had a 3.21 ERA and 12/2 K/BB ratio in 14 innings at the Triple-A level and owns a 3.58 ERA over parts of six seasons in the big leagues. Look for him in middle relief.

Sanches gave up five runs in his four innings with the big club. He’ll probably get another shot at some point later this season.

The deal includes an invite to spring training. Sanches, 33, posted a 3.94 ERA and 53/36 K/BB ratio over 61 2/3 innings with the Marlins this season. He’ll need to show better command to have any chance of cracking the Opening Day roster.
