Guillen, who last played July 1, believes he can start as soon as Thursday.

As with a lot of groin injuries, this one would have worked out a lot better if Guillen had just gone on the DL when it occurred.

Guillen is day-to-day with a strained groin.

The swelling in Guillen’s right knee has gone down after a week, and he may be able to return this season. “I was wrong in thinking he wasn’t working out or rehabbing yet, because he is,” manager Alan Trammell said. “He’s doing quite a bit, in fact.” Don’t write Guillen off yet, as he may be able to help your fantasy team the last week of the season.

The Tigers expect an answer one way or another this afternoon. As soon as the verdict is in, we will pass it along to you.

''He doesn’t have the burst he needs,’' manager Alan Trammell said. ''I think he’s still getting the feel of catching the ball and throwing it across.’' The Tigers remain optimistic that Guillen will be ready for Opening Day.

Guillen left last night’s game in the fifth inning.

We’ll be skeptical until he shows up. Guillen, who was injured on Sept. 11, has been working out in Venezuela this winter.

Willie Bloomquist got the start at shortstop. No word yet on whether Guillen will be back tonight.
