Red Sox selected RHP Alex Wilson 77th and shortstop David Renfroe 107th on Tuesday.
The Red Sox didn’t shoot for the moon with their first-round pick, but both of their next two selections were first-round talents. Wilson, who was expected to be a first-rounder going into 2009, is a fastball-slider pitcher with closer potential. The Red Sox could move him back to the rotation, but he is likely to end up in the pen long-term. Renfroe, who has an offer to play quarterback at Ole Miss, fell due to signability concerns. He also has plenty of potential as a pitcher, but the Red Sox took him as a shortstop. Despite his two-sport status, he’s rather polished for a high school product.
