Wilson (twisted right ankle) and Cairo (strained right hamstring) were hurt on Saturday.

“We have some other options, but I think Enrique can do it,” Torre said. Except for some flukey success against Pedro Martinez, Wilson doesn’t bring anything to the table. Miguel Cairo and Homer Bush will both get chances to beat him out for the job. Since the Yankees will eventually upgrade, the winner of the competition won’t be worth more than a few bucks on draft day.

He ran the bases yesterday, and looked fit to play. Wilson is further along in his recovery from a groin muscle strain than Derek Jeter, and as consequence, will start tonight ahead of the Yankee captain.

Wilson is bothered by a slight groin strain, but is available as a backup infielder today. He will likely be back at second base on Tuesday.

''Wilson is playing second because he knows this ballpark, he knows this team,’' manager Dusty Baker said. That’s good to know, because before seeing the quote, we were just assuming Baker felt sorry for the Yankees.

Wilson, batting .371, is threatening to beat out Chris Gomez for a job on the Baltimore bench. We don’t really expect it to happen.

Wilson can refuse the assignment, but he’s not going to have a better chance of returning to the majors with another organization.

Wilson, Neifi Perez and Jose Macias all on the same team. This should be good. Wilson better not have any fantasy value as a backup for Perez at shortstop.

Manager Joe Torre said Wilson, the probable regular at second base, could miss a few days.
