Mata

Mata had eight saves, a 1.86 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP in 14 2/3 innings this season as Norfolk’s closer. He probably won’t be asked to save games in the majors since this will be his first time through the highest level of baseball, but he’ll certainly be a nice addition to the O’s setup corps.

He received an invite to camp. Mata spent a little over a month in the big leagues this past season, posting a 7.79 ERA and 8/9 K/BB ratio over 17 1/3 innings for the Orioles, who outrighted him off the 40-man roster in November. The 26-year-old will provide organizational depth at the minor league level.

Mata was called up from Triple-A Norfolk in late May after rattling off a 1.86 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP and eight saves in 14 2/3 innings as the Tides’ closer. That success has not transferred to the big leagues, where the 26-year-old owns a 9.22 ERA, a 7/7 K/BB ratio and a 1.98 WHIP in 13 2/3 frames.

The 26-year-old Mata allowed 16 runs -- 15 earned -- in 17 2/3 innings out of the Orioles’ bullpen. He will head back to the Triple-A Norfolk, where he posted a 1.86 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP as the Tides’ closer before his promotion on May 25. The O’s may recall him in a late-season emergency.
