Athletics’ manager Bob Melvin said Monday that right-hander Jarrod Parker is still being considered for the team’s fifth starter job, despite being sent down to Triple-A Sacramento.
The A’s don’t need a fifth starter for the first time until April 17th because of scheduled off-days early in the season, so the plan is for Parker to stay back and work in Arizona for now. The 23-year-old right-hander walked seven over 3 2/3 innings on Monday against the Diamondbacks and had a 9/13 K/BB ratio over 11 innings during Cactus League play, so he’ll have to make progress pretty quickly. Even if the A’s ultimately opt to go with Tyson Ross and Graham Godfrey in the final two rotation spots, Parker would be an obvious alternative if either pitcher struggles.

Graham Godfrey struggled against the Royals Wednesday, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks over just three innings.
He struck out one and surrendered a solo homer to Lorenzo Cain. Godfrey entered spring training with an outside shot at a rotation spot, and he hasn’t helped himself with a 7.11 ERA through five outings. Still, with Jarrod Parker and Brad Peacock having been sent to minor league camp, he remains in the running.
  • AZ Starting Pitcher
Graham Godfrey shut out the Giants for five innings in his start Monday night.
Godfrey allowed four hits, walked none and struck out three. Godfrey is in the mix to be one of Oakland’s five starters to begin the year, though he projects as more of a middle reliever for the long haul. AL-only leaguers can take a wait-and-see approach.
  • AZ Starting Pitcher
Graham Godfrey allowed one run in 3 2/3 innings and struck out five in a victory over the Mariners on Friday.
Godfrey also got five outs on the ground. He needed a strong outing to stay in Oakland’s rotation picture for the start of the season. He has a 6.52 ERA through four outings, so he’s still pretty clearly an underdog in the competition.
  • AZ Starting Pitcher
Graham Godfrey allowed two runs over six innings Tuesday in a loss to the Royals.
Godfrey followed up Tom Milone’s zero-strikeout gem with a nice outing that included just one K. It’s unlikely that Godfrey will have lasting value in AL-only leagues, but he is an option in his home starts against mediocre offenses.
  • AZ Starting Pitcher
Athletics optioned RHP Graham Godfrey to Triple-A Sacramento.
Godfrey won a spot in the Athletics’ season-opening start rotation but went 0-3 with a 5.06 ERA and just seven strikeouts in his 16 innings of work. Pedro Figueroa has been recalled in a corresponding 25-man roster move and will join the Oakland bullpen.
  • AZ Starting Pitcher
Graham Godfrey allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits and two home runs in five innings of Sunday’s loss to the Mariners.
He struck out three and walked one. Godfrey served up bombs to Justin Smoak and the light-hitting Brendan Ryan. He’s now 0-2 with a 4.09 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 4/2 K/BB ratio through his first 11 innings. The 27-year-old righty will get the Indians at home next weekend.
  • AZ Starting Pitcher
Athletics recalled RHP Graham Godfrey from Triple-A Sacramento.
Godfrey is taking Brandon McCarthy’s spot in the Oakland rotation. The 27-year-old right-hander posted a 5.06 ERA in 16 innings earlier this season with the A’s and should be ignored in nearly all fantasy formats.
  • AZ Starting Pitcher
Graham Godfrey gave up four runs in three innings to take a loss to the Angels Tuesday in his return to the majors.
Godfrey appeared to be dealing with a blister problem, though he stayed in initially. He simply had no command tonight. Just 24 of his 53 pitches went for strikes and six of those were hits.
  • AZ Starting Pitcher
Graham Godfrey (finger) threw a bullpen session Saturday and reported no issues.
Godfrey dealt with a blister in his last start, but is expected to make his scheduled start Monday for the injured Brandon McCarthy (shoulder). He currently owns a 6.16 ERA and 9/10 K/BB ratio over four starts this year and should be ignored outside of AL-only formats.
