The 29-year-old former top prospect had been playing in the Mexican League where he was slashing .267/.372/.530 with 13 homers, 49 RBI, four stolen bases and a 44/33 K/BB ratio over 239 plate appearances for the Algodoneros de Union Laguna. He’ll add extra infield depth at the Triple-A level for the Royals.

Díaz wound up electing free agency shortly after passing through waivers unclaimed following Detroit’s decision to remove him from their 40-man roster. The 27-year-old middle infielder has gotten into eight games this season in the big leagues and will search for a new opportunity on the open market.

Díaz was officially removed from Detroit’s 40-man roster over the weekend after going unclaimed on waivers. The 27-year-old middle infielder, who was claimed off waivers earlier this month from the Giants, will remain with the Tigers as extra organizational depth.

With Javier Baez returning from bereavement leave on Friday, the Tigers needed to clear a spot on the active roster and Díaz was unfortunately the odd-man out. He went 0-for-5 with a pair of strikeouts during his brief time with the big league club.

He was subsequently optioned to Triple-A Toledo. The 27-year-old former top prospect has hit .250/.337/.511 with seven homers, 19 RBI and three stolen bases in 25 games at Triple-A Sacramento this season. It shouldn’t take him long to garner an opportunity with the big league club in Detroit.

Díaz wound up spending only a couple days in the majors after being recalled earlier this week in advance of the trade deadline. The 27-year-old former top prospect has one hit in 19 at-bats over six games in the big leagues this season.

The 27-year-old infielder has gone hitless in eight at-bats with the Giants this season. In 25 games at Triple-A Sacramento however he’s hitting .250/.337/.511 with seven homers, 19 RBI and three stolen bases.

With Wilmer Flores returning from the injured list on Tuesday, the 27-year-old infielder was no longer needed to provide extra infield depth. Díaz has gone 0-for-8 during his brief time with the big league club this season.

Díaz has been sent down ahead of Tuesday’s series opener against the Blue Jays in Toronto. The 27-year-old infielder went 0-for-8 at the dish in a pair of contests in his brief stint with the Giants.
