Rays LHP prospect Michael Velasquez allowed just one hit over seven shutout innings Sunday in a win for Low-A Bowling Green.
He finished with a season-high eight strikeouts and didn’t allow a walk. Velasquez lost his perfect game on a single by South Bend catcher P.J. Higgins with one out in the seventh inning. 60 of the left-hander’s 89 pitches went for strikes. Sunday was Velasquez’s first start in over two weeks following a brief stint pitching out of the bullpen. Despite Sunday’s gem, Velasquez still holds an ugly 6.25 ERA for the season.
