The Texas Rangers have signed infielder Darwin Barney to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Barney, 32, has spent the past couple of years year with the Blue Jays. He’s a poor hitter -- he hit .232/.275/.327 -- in 362 plate appearances -- but he’s a versatile defender, able to cover short, second, third and even some outfield if needed. In the age of 13-man (or more) pitching staffs, having a Swiss Army Knife like Barney around has its uses.
