Cardinals shortstop Aledmys Diaz missed about six weeks after suffering a hairline fracture in his right thumb. He returned on September 12 but manager Mike Matheny says Diaz’s throwing motion was off and that he’s been dealing with waning arm strength, ESPN’s Mark Saxon reports.

Diaz was given Tuesday night off to receive treatment. The club is hoping he can return on Wednesday.

In 426 plate appearances this season, Diaz has hit .303/.368/.516 with 16 home runs and 61 RBI. He was a candidate -- and still is -- for the National League Rookie of the Year Award prior to the injury.
