Veteran outfielder Angel Pagan remains a free agent with spring training under way and the regular season looming on the horizon. Playing with Team Puerto Rico in an exhibition against the Giants, his former team, Pagan spoke with the media about his contract status.
MLB.com’s Chris Haft reports that Pagan has only received minor league contract offers thus far, which he’s not interested in. Pagan said, “I just don’t feel I need to be fighting for a job. [...] If a team wants me to help a team win, they know I can help them win.” He continued, “Because I’ve been in that situation. I’m a winning player. I’m healthy. They’ll see it in the (World) Baseball Classic.”
Puerto Rico is in Pool D of the World Baseball Classic. The team will play its first game of pool play against Venezuela at 9 PM EST on Friday.
Pagan, 35, hit .277/.331/.418 with 12 home runs, 55 RBI, and 71 runs scored in 543 plate appearances last season with the Giants.
