The Tigers announced today that reliever Bobby Parnell’s contract has been purchased from Triple-A Toledo. To make room on the roster, the club designated pitcher Jose Valdez for assignment.

Parnell, 31, was once a dominant reliever with the Mets, but spent most of the past two years recovering from Tommy John surgery. With Toledo this year, Parnell compiled a 3.98 ERA with a 16/11 K/BB ratio in 20 1/3 innings.

The Tigers’ bullpen has been an impediment this season. As a unit, the bullpen has a 4.78 ERA, the third-worst mark in baseball behind the Reds and Rangers.
