Clay Buchholz gets platelet-rich plasma injection from Dr. James Andrews

Clay Buchholz went to Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion on his strained flexor tendon and the Red Sox right-hander received a platelet-rich plasma injection as a new form of treatment.

The good news is that Dr. Andrews did not advise Buchholz to undergo surgery. The bad news is that his recovery has been halted for what general manager Ben Cherington told Jimmy Toscano of will be “a few weeks.”

Toscano also notes that Red Sox right-hander Brandon Workman received a platelet-rich plasma injection as treatment for his elbow injury in April and ended up having Tommy John surgery in June, so Buchholz is hardly out of the woods yet.

There’s a strong chance Buchholz has pitched his last game this season, in which case he’d finish the year with a 3.26 ERA and 107/23 K/BB ratio in 113 innings after struggling with a 5.34 ERA in 2014.
