Not only was “a highly intoxicated” Delmon Young arrested and charged with assault last night in New York, the Detroit Free Press reports that he’s also being charged with an “aggravated harassment hate crime” for what detective Joseph Cavitolo called “anti-Semitic remarks” during the assault.
Police told the Free Press that it’s unclear if the victim was Jewish, which would certainly add an odd layer to the “anti-Semitic remarks” angle. The hate crime charge is a misdemeanor, so it’s more like icing on the (allegedly) horrible person cake.
So far the Tigers have declined to comment, saying only “we’ll get back to you” when the newspaper sought their response to Young’s arrest.
And in remarkable timing, six years ago today Young was suspended indefinitely for throwing his bat at a Triple-A umpire.
