Veteran righty Justin Verlander was hoping to join the Tigers after making just one minor league rehab start, but he got shelled for three runs on six hits and two walks Sunday in a Triple-A outing that didn’t stretch beyond three innings. So Detroit will ask him to take one more turn on the farm.
Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports that Verlander is scheduled to make a second minor league rehab start this Saturday with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens. It’s a near certainty that he will join the Detroit rotation after that, unless there’s some sort of physical setback.
Verlander has been out all season because of a right triceps strain.
The 32-year-old posted a disappointing 4.54 ERA and 1.40 WHIP across 206 innings in 2014.
