In a move that seemed like the plan as soon as they traded left-hander Jon Niese to the Pirates, the Mets have re-signed right-hander Bartolo Colon.
Colon, who’ll be 43 years old in May, gets $7.25 million and Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com says he turned down bigger offers to remain in New York.
Colon started at least 30 games in 2015 for the third straight season, logging 195 innings with a 4.16 ERA and 136/24 K/BB ratio. His raw stuff and strikeout rate bear no resemblance to his peak as a flame-throwing Cy Young winner, but Colon led the league in walk rate with just 1.1 per nine innings and went at least six innings in 23 of 31 starts.
He’ll fill out the Mets’ otherwise young, star-studded, high-velocity rotation while keeping a spot warm for the rehabbing Zack Wheeler and look to win double-digit games in a season for the 13th time.
