The Padres have signed pitcher Edwin Jackson, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports is reporting. Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune confirms Rosenthal’s report and clarifies that it is a minor league contract. As the Cubs are paying his $11 million salary, the Padres only owe him the pro-rated major league minimum salary, Rosenthal notes.
Jackson, 32, was released by the Marlins earlier this month after giving up seven runs on 13 hits and six walks with seven strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings of relief. He spent about a month on the disabled list between mid-April and mid-May due to a right triceps strain.
Jackson was solid as a reliever for the Cubs and Braves last season, but has mostly struggled in recent years. The Padres, though, have very little to lose by taking a flier on Jackson.
