Pirates president Frank Coonelly downplays possibility of Edinson Volquez return

Free agent starter Edinson Volquez had a nice bounce-back year with the Pirates in 2014, finishing at 13-7 with a 3.04 ERA and a 140/71 K/BB ratio in 192 2/3 innings. Pirates president Frank Coonelly doesn’t sound like he’s in a rush to bring him back.

Per MLB.com’s Tom Singer, on the possibility of bringing Volquez back on a two-year deal worth $20 million, Coonelly said, “He could get that. It probably won’t be here.”

The Pirates have already signed A.J. Burnett and Francisco Liriano so far this off-season, but with a rotation that currently includes Vance Worley and Jeff Locke, the Pirates could still use an upgrade or two.
