Newsday’s Tim Healey reports that the Mets have signed infielder Adeiny Hechavarria to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Hechavarria, 29, spent last year with the Rays, Pirates, and Yankees. He hit a light .247/.279/.345 in 321 plate appearances but played good defense at shortstop and third base.
With the Mets, Hechavarria will be competing for a spot on the bench as a backup infielder. While all four starting spots across the infield are spoken for, the Mets don’t have a versatile backup infielder, so it stands to reason Hechavarria has a good chance of making the Opening Day roster.
