Terry Francona and Indians confirm he’s a candidate for manager job, will interview

Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona walks back to the dugout after visiting with the home plate umpire between the sixth and seventh innings of their MLB American League baseball game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts in this file image from September 30, 2009. Francona’s eight-year run as Red Sox manager ended September 30, 2011 when the team announced he was not returning next season. Francona, nicknamed Tito, led the Red Sox to the World Series title in 2004 -- ending a championship drought dating back to 1918 - and again in 2007, but speculation about his future increased after the Red Sox missed this season’s playoffs after a dramatic late season collapse. Terry Francona and the Indians are no longer just a rumor.

Francona confirmed reports that he’s a candidate to replace Manny Acta as Cleveland’s manager, telling Jordan Bastian of MLB.com that he’s already spoken to general manager Chris Antonetti about the gig and will eventually come in for an interview.

Antonetti also acknowledged the team’s interest in Francona and said he’s currently one of two candidates along with interim manager Sandy Alomar.

There’s been some speculation that the Indians may balk at Francona’s asking price, in which case perhaps Alomar is the pre-approved fallback option.
