Home plate umpire Mike Everitt left last night’s game between the Detroit Tigers and Colorado Rockies in the middle of the first inning after being hit by a warmup pitch from Tigers starter Michael Fulmer.

One of Fulmer’s pitches got past Tigers catcher James McCann and hit Everitt in the what appeared to be the groin area, as you can see here just before impact:

He doubled over on the field and was attended to by a Rockies trainer. He seemed to be generally OK and in good spirits as he left the game, so here’s hoping it wasn’t too serious.

The rest of the game was played with three umpires, as Tom Woodring moved from second base to home plate and the other two handled it minor league style.
