Paul Konerko retired last October after spending 18 seasons in the majors and the White Sox aren’t wasting any time to honor their longtime slugger. It was announced today that he will have his No. 14 jersey retired by the White Sox on May 23.

Here’s a statement from White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf:

“Paul Konerko is one of the greatest players in White Sox history not only for his strength and performance on the field, but also for his heart and leadership off the field. Paul was a humble leader whose passion for the game earned the respect and love of the entire clubhouse and fans all over the country. We honor Paul by retiring his number and welcoming him to the ranks of White Sox legends.”

A six-time All-Star, Konerko will be the 11th player to have his number retired by the White Sox. He’ll join a group which includes Nellie Fox, Harold Baines, Luke Appling, Minnie Minoso, Luis Aparicio, Ted Lyons, Billy Pierce, Frank Thomas, Carlton Fisk, and Dodgers great Jackie Robinson.
