From Joel Sherman of the New York Post comes word that the Yankees have signed utilityman Jayson Nix to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training.

Nix is unlikely to land an Opening Day roster spot next March in Tampa, but he can play his way into the emergency mid-season callup list with a strong showing at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre.

The 29-year-old infielder-outfielder posted a decent .814 OPS across 195 plate appearances in the minor leagues this past year but a brutal .169/.245/.309 batting line over 151 plate appearances in the majors.

Nix was the 44th overall selection in the 2001 MLB Amateur Draft. He began his career with the Rockies.
