Nationals POBO Paul Toboni said he won’t be hiring a general manager “for the time being.”
The Nationals will have three assistant GMs reporting to Toboni. Two of those are new hires in Devin Pearson, formerly of the Red Sox, and Justin Horowitz, formerly of the Pirates. The other is Mike DeBartolo, who served under Mike Rizzo and became the Nationals’ interim GM when Rizzo exited. DeBartolo is also getting a senior VP tag on his title.

The Nationals are hiring 33-year-old Blake Butera as their new manager, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Butera was serving as the senior player development director for the Rays, though he previously spent four seasons managing in the minors. Before that, he was the Rays’ 35th-round pick out of Boston College in 2015 and spent two years in the system as an infielder before giving up on that idea. He’ll be the youngest manager in baseball since the Twins went with Frank Quilici in 1972.

Joe Doyle of Over-Slot reports that the Nationals are hiring Pirates’ director of amateur scouting Justin Horowitz to be their assistant general manager.
Horowitz has a strong working relationship with Nationals’ new president of baseball operations Paul Toboni as the duo worked together with the Red Sox from 2015 to 2023. Horowitz had spent two years with the Pirates as their director of amateur scouting and oversaw the drafting of top prospect Konnor Griffin with the top overall selection in the 2024 draft.

The Nationals have let go of assistant GMs Eddie Longosz and Mark Scialabba, according to The Athletic.
New president of baseball operations Paul Toboni is making his first changes since joining the club. Others have also been told they’re not being brought back. Longosz was the Nationals’ head of player development, while Scialabba was director of player personnel. One person who seems likely to stick around is Mike DeBartolo, who took over as interim GM after Mike Rizzo was fired.
