Mendez

Mendez, 21, was acquired from the Red Sox last July as part of the Jarrod Saltalamacchia deal. The young right-hander posted an impressive 3.31 ERA and 130/45 K/BB ratio over 117 innings this season with Class A Hickory. He is quietly emerging as one of the better pitching prospects in the Rangers’ organization.

Tough break for Mendez, who had the very same injury last year. Acquired from the Red Sox in the Jarrod Saltalamacchia deal, the 22-year-old had a 1.82 ERA, two saves and a 24/11 K/BB ratio over 24 2/3 innings this season in Double-A.

The Rangers designated Ross Detwiler for assignment to clear a roster spot for him. Mendez began the year in Texas, logging a 5.40 ERA in 12 relief appearances before being sent down to Round Rock in early May. The 24-year-old will be used in middle relief.

Mendez has allowed seven runs over 11 2/3 relief innings this season with the big club. He returns to a 2.57 ERA at Round Rock.

Mendez, 23, owns a 4.02 ERA and 30/12 K/BB ratio over 31 1/3 innings this season in Triple-A. He’ll pitch in middle relief.

The 23-year-old never had a real chance to make the Opening Day roster. Mendez needs to make up for lost time after being limited to just 24 2/3 innings last season due to a stress fracture in his elbow.

It clears a 40-man roster spot. Mendez has allowed seven runs over 11 2/3 relief innings this season with the big club.

Koji Uehara was moved to the 60-day disabled list to create room on the 40-man roster. Mendez holds a 3.02 ERA and 31/24 K/BB ratio over 44 2/3 relief innings at the big league level across the last two seasons.

He allowed five runs over his last three appearances to get the boot. Mendez has been replaced in the bullpen by Spencer Patton.

The move clears a spot for Chris Young on Boston’s 40-man roster. Mendez was just claimed off waivers from the Rangers back in September and could soon find himself on the move again.
