He could have played Wednesday, but the Yankees just wanted to give him an extra day. The Yankees haven’t ruled him out for a roster spot, but he’s running out of chances to impress.

    Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Ronnier Mustelier is giving himself a shot to see some playing time at third base with how he’s hit this spring.
    Mustelier is batting .353/.450/.647 with a homer and a triple over 10 Grapefruit League contests. A Cuban defector, the 28-year-old batted .314/.371/.488 with 15 homers and 10 steals between Double- and Triple-A in 2012. He’s probably a longshot to make the Opening Day roster, but nothing can be ruled out with the Bombers desperate for corner infield options.

    Mustelier is batting .313/.371/.500 in 32 at-bats as he attempts to enhance his long shot bid for a bench spot. If Derek Jeter winds up on the DL, it’d seem to improve Mustelier’s chances, though that wouldn’t necessarily mean that he’d stick around for long.

    Braves sent INF Ronnier Mustelier outright to Triple-A Gwinnett.
    Mustelier served as the 26th man for the Braves in a doubleheader earlier this month, but he did not receive a plate appearance. The 31-year-old from Santiago de Cuba is batting .300/.362/.399 over 357 plate appearances this season in the minor leagues.

    He’s hit .293/.356/.381 with one homer for Gwinnett this season. Mustelier will serve as the Braves’ 26th man for Sunday’s game at Fort Bragg.

    Mustelier was up as the 26th man for a doubleheader with the Braves this season but didn’t make his major league debut. He batted .291/.353/.394 with five homers for Triple-A Gwinnett and will return there for 2017.
