Matt Mantei blew a save by giving up a run in the 10th, but he came back with a scoreless 11th to pick up the win. Service is unlikely to record another save this year.

The Diamondbacks should have done a better job of signing minor league free agents (and keeping the ones they did sign). Service, who last pitched in the majors in 2000, is getting called up even though he didn’t pitch in a single ‘A’ game this spring. He probably won’t stick around for long, as the Diamondbacks are considering re-signing Mike Jackson.

He’s expected to join the team today, along with Randy Choate and Mike Gosling from Triple-A Tucson.

Service allowed one run in two innings during his week with the Diamondbacks.

Service, 35, last appeared in the majors with Oakland in 2000. He’s not going to be invited to major league camp and shouldn’t be considered a candidate to see time with the Diamondbacks this season.

Service had an 18/2 K/BB ratio in 18 1/3 innings with the Diamondbacks, and that’s probably why the Blue Jays wanted to give him an opportunity. Still, there’s nothing else to like here. This move is probably going to turn out badly.

Service was 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA in 18 relief appearances.

Service allowed one run in two innings for Arizona last month. He’ll rejoin the bullpen.
