Dodgers pitching prospect Zachary Bird allowed four hits, three walks, and one run, striking out seven batters over five innings for Low-A Great Lakes on Wednesday.
Bird has done much better in his return to Low-A Great Lakes, putting up a 3.93 ERA and 1.427 WHIP with a 7.5 K/9. Opposing batters have a .245/.339/.369 line against Bird, which is inflated by his 4.5 BB/9. He has a mid-90s fastball and a biting curveball, but his poor control increases his pitch counts and forces him into counts where batters can sit on his fastball.

Dodgers right-handed pitching prospect Zachary Bird will return to Low-A Great Lakes to open 2014.
Bird has the potential to have a mid-90s fastball and a nasty curveball, but his career 5.15 ERA and 5.1 BB/9 show how he has struggled with his command. Watch to see how he does in his return to the Midwest League.

Braves acquired RHP Zachary Bird from the Dodgers in the three-team, 13-player Hector Olivera trade.
Atlanta is also getting infielder Hector Olivera, lefty reliever Paco Rodriguez, and the Marlins’ 2016 competitive-balance draft pick. Bird, a ninth-round pick of the Dodgers in 2012, has a 4.75 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and 95/48 K/BB ratio in 89 innings this season at High-A. The 21-year-old is far from a top prospect.
