NASCAR playoff clinch scenarios for Talladega

chase for sprint cup logo

With Joey Logano winning in consecutive races (Charlotte Motor Speedway and Kansas Speedway) to open the second round of the the Chase for the Sprint Cup, 11 of 12 drivers will enter Sunday’s elimination race at Talladega Superspeedway in search of security.

The playoff field will be pared to eight drivers after Talladega, which marks the conclusion of the three-race second round. One more spot in the second round will be reserved for Sunday’s winner (if it’s a Chase driver besides Logano), and the rest of the field will advance according to the points standings.

Here are the clinching scenarios -- the minimum finishes needed regardless of others’ results -- to advance entering Talladega:
--Denny Hamlin: 14th and no laps led; 15th and at least one lap led; 16th and most laps led

--Kurt Busch: Eighth and no laps led; ninth and at least one lap led; 10th and most laps led

--Carl Edwards: Seventh and no laps led; eighth and at least one lap led; ninth and most laps led

--Kevin Harvick: Third and no laps led; fourth with a lap led

--Jeff Gordon and Brad Keselowski: Second or better; third and at least one lap led; fourth and most laps led

--Martin Truex Jr.: Second and no laps led; third and the most laps led

--Kyle Busch, Ryan Newman, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Matt Kenseth are assured of advancing only through a win.
