Becky Hammon made history when the Spurs hired her last year as the NBA’s first full-time assistant coach.

Now, she’ll get another chance to expand her influence.

Jeff McDonald of San Antonio Express-News:

Coaching summer league is a good opportunity for any assistant coach, but I think it’s particularly important here.

It’s one thing to have a female assistant coach, and the Spurs seemingly got on board with that last season. It’s another to have a female head coach running the show, even in the summer league. I expect no resistance from San Antonio’s summer league players, but this will be an adjustment – for everyone she coaches and everyone who watches her coach.

The sooner we normalize the NBA having female coaches, the better. Women coaches deserve an opportunity to advance in the field on their merits.

This is a good step in the right direction.
