C.J. McCollum has gone from a dark horse rookie of the year candidate to a guy we hope we see on the court before it’s 2014.
McCollum broke his foot — the same fifth metatarsal he broke in college — just a few days into training camp, then on Wednesday the Trail Blazers announced the rookie will not have foot surgery. Instead he underwent an ultrasound therapy designed to strengthen the bone.
The bottom line — he will re-evaluated in six weeks. Meaning around Thanksgiving they’ll look at him and decide how much longer he’ll be out.
McCollum was the No. 10 pick of the Blazers in the last draft. You remember him as the guy who dropped 30 to lead Lehigh over Duke in 2012 and screw up your NCAA Tournament bracket. He’s a dangerous 6’3” combo guard and it will be interesting to see how Portland fits him in around Damian Lillard.
Looks like we’re going to have to wait a while to find out.
