The Hawaii star is not just a return specialist. He could muscle Troy Edwards or Ernest Wilford out of receiver snaps.

''Obviously, Chad Owens struggled today fielding the ball,’' coach Jack Del Rio said. ''Everybody can see that. It appeared after the first one that he lost his confidence. We tried to stay with him. It didn’t get any better, so we ended up taking him out.’'

Owens was cut from the active roster earlier this week after muffing several punts Sunday.

Owens said he was told by the coaching staff that he will be in uniform. He’ll be used on punt return and at receiver.

The team will add Owens, a sixth-round pick this year, to the team’s practice squad if he makes it through waivers.

Terms were not disclosed. Owens figues to be Jacksonville’s top return man this season. He isn’t likely to play much at receiver.

Owens has been great as both a return man and a wide receiver in camp. His size will limit his chances as an NFL wide receiver, but expect Owens to make a lot of people miss as a return man this season.

Owens gives the Jags another option on kick and punt returns.

The Hawaii grad, who was supposed to be a return specialist, is turning into one of the stories of training camp. He’s someone to look at in deep keeper leagues.

He’s earned a spot in Jacksonville’s receiver rotation off the bench.
