The Steelers expect Duce Staley to play, but Jerome Bettis may get a few more carries this weekend.
Bettis has 18 carries for 22 yards, with 5 TDs this season. Staley is questionable with an infected toe and may not carry as heavy a load as usual. We still wouldn’t risk playing Bettis.
  • PIT Running Back
Jerome Bettis will not be the starting running back in Pittsburgh to open the season.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported the inevitable for Bettis, who will be lucky to get 5 carries a game. Verron Haynes actually has a better chance to spell Duce Staley for third-down carries. Don’t draft Bettis.
  • PIT Running Back
The Dolphins reportedly inquired about Jerome Bettis.
The Steelers couldn’t afford to trade him because his recent signing bonus would accelarate and they’d be over the salary cap. It would also be a PR nightmare in Pittsburgh.
  • PIT Running Back
Jerome Bettis will be listed as probable for week ten with a calf injury.
His week ten value, of course, will depend on whether Duce Staley will play. If Staley starts, however, a closer split in carries is possible because of Staley’s injury.
  • PIT Running Back
Jerome Bettis left yesterday’s game with cramps in the fourth quarter.
It shouldn’t be a concern, Pittsburgh was just being cautious. No word yet on Duce Staley’s availability for next week.
  • PIT Running Back
Coach Bill Cowher indicated Jerome Bettis may have to carry a large majority of carries this weekend.
Duce Staley is listed as questionable. Reading between the lines, there appears to be a better than 50% chance that Bettis will get another start. We’ll see.
  • PIT Running Back
Jerome Bettis, probable with a knee injury, returned to Steelers practice Thursday.
Duce Staley missed practice again Thursday. It’s looking like Bettis will get his third straight start. He’s a fine RB2 play versus the Bengals.
  • PIT Running Back
Coach Bill Cowher plans to use Jerome Bettis in more than goal-line situations the rest of the season.
Bettis should earn double-digit carries and goal-line work as Duce Staley gets healthy. It’s tough to sit the Bus at this point because of his TDs.
  • PIT Running Back
Jerome Bettis and the Steelers have swapped contract proposals, a clear sign he’s leaning towards returning next season.
This would be rough fantasy news for Duce Staley and Verron Haynes. The Steelers will have to re-work a deal before March 2nd or the team would be forced to release Bettis because of his high salary.
  • PIT Running Back
Jerome Bettis will return to the Steelers if they can agree to a contract by Wednesday.
By all accounts, Bettis wants to return. There is still a chance he could work in TV or move elsewhere, but most likely he’ll remain Duce Staley’s backup.
