Sixth-rounder Kyle Williams pulled a hamstring, and Ted Ginn is concentrating on receiver duties. Vann set an NCAA record with 11 combined TD returns at Florida A&M, becoming just one of five players in history to return both punts and kickoffs for at least 1,000 yards. He has a legit chance to make the team this year.

Lions WR/KR Derrick Williams drew his coaching staff’s ire yet again when he called a fair punt with plenty of room to run in Saturday’s preseason opener. Vann showed tremendous potential as a returner in college before struggling to field punts cleanly in 49ers camp.

It’s way too early to hand Williams the job. Ted Ginn is focusing on making progress as a receiver for now and LeRoy Vann was also brought in to be a return specialist. We doubt Williams will still have this job when the dust settles.

Vann was a record-setting punt returner at Florida A&M, but he had trouble consistently catching punts in Niners training camp. Rookie Kyle Williams and Ted Ginn are now the favorites to return punts for San Francisco.

Vann barely lasted a week in Niners training camp last August and didn’t resurface during the season. He’s likely just a practice body in Cincinnati.
